What Republicans Need to Know About Cleveland

Welcome, GOP! Here’s a guide to our fair city. By VINCE GUERRIERI

"last time any political convention was held in Cleveland was 1936. The city was the fifth-biggest in the country, and it seemed like the sky was the limit for a town that billed itself as “the Best Location in the Nation.”

It hasn’t all been downhill since, but Cleveland’s taken its lumps as the “Mistake by the Lake.” Now, people here are pretty excited that the Republicans will be holding their presidential convention here in 2016—thought most of us, to be honest, are more interested in the faint prospect that LeBron James will come back to lead the Cavs to glory."

"Andrew Breitbart, the outspoken conservative media publisher and pundit has died at age 43. A message posted on Breitbart.tv announced Breitbart’s death “with a terrible feeling of pain and loss,” saying that he died of natural causes shortly after midnight in Los Angeles. “We have lost a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a dear friend, a patriot and a happy warrior,” the statement said. Breitbart's media sites trumpeted controversial investigations that led to the resignations of former New York Rep. Anthony Weiner and former Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod. He also was a former editor for the Drudge Report and helped launch The Huffington Post website, MSNBC reported."

On opening day of the Republican National Convention I took the opportunity to visit the print media news centers. They were large and complicated partitioned beehives of activity with what seemed to be miles of wires everywhere. When I stopped by the Washington Post news center, I found well-known blogger Andrew Breitbart (
www.breitbart.com) and his business partner Larry Solov.

Mr. Breitbart was in make-up getting ready for a guest appearance on a Post news video… He was quite friendly and talkative and appeared to having the time of his life.

ST. PAUL—His name may sound unfamiliar, but Andrew Breitbart has built a career helping to create the Drudge Report and the Huffington Post, while also overseeing his own news-aggregation site breitbart.com—and becoming prominent in a largely underground movement of conservatives in Hollywood. Next week he plans to launch a new site (
www.breitbart.com/bighollywood) that will give voice to this rogue community in the entertainment industry.

[…]

We had just left the National Review party and were headed to the National Journal party. At both events, the Los Angeles-based Mr. Breitbart, who is 39 and the father of four children, was the only person not wearing a blazer. “No matter how hard I try, I don’t fit in at these things.”

So he claims. Before we left, the pundit Jonah Goldberg accused him of being the most popular guy in the room.

At the National Journal party, publisher David Bradley was delighted to finally put a face to the name. “That’s Andrew Breitbart?” he exclaimed. Walking into the Weekly Standard party, a friend from L.A. greeted him. “Have you had a chance to take a shower yet?” joked Steve McEveety, who is Mel Gibson’s producing partner.

St. Petersburg Times changing name to Tampa Bay Times on Jan. 1

St. Petersburg Times evolves into Tampa Bay Times

"A letter to readers

Since I started here as a reporter in 1978, I have answered my phone with some version of “St. Pete Times.” I will need to learn a new habit.

On Sunday, Jan. 1, we changed our name to the Tampa Bay Times. The new name reflects the growth of our newspaper and our vision for this region.

This change was a long time coming. For decades, the Times has been reaching north and east from St. Petersburg. Nearly 25 years ago, we launched our Tampa edition; on a typical Sunday, it routinely sells more than 100,000 copies. By a wide margin, the Times is Florida's favorite newspaper.

With that success, our name no longer fit the newspaper or the audience we serve. Three-fourths of Times readers live outside St. Petersburg.

Howard Kurtz, the brown sweater and the teeny-tiny laptop

Howard Kurtz, the brown sweater and the teeny-tiny laptop - - Howard Kurtz of the Washington Post at the RNC on September 1, 2008.

Kevin Dayhoff July 3, 2009

Reading through Howard Kurtz’s Tweets and columns this morning, took me back - for whatever reason - to when I had a chance to chat with him for a few stolen moments – and snap his picture - at the Republican National Convention last September 2008.

The convention was held in a sports arena retrofitted for the quadrennial gathering of the party faithful for the purposes of nominating a Republican presidential and vice presidential candidate for the national elections last November.

The arena itself was located in St. Paul near the banks of the Mississippi River and it had the appropriate name – “Xcel Energy Center.” Emphasis on “Energy.”

Everyday, my first stop inside, once I breezed through the elaborate security checkpoints, was the coffee stand wisely located at the entrance.

“Whatta ya having,” asked a friendly well-dressed young lady behind the counter as she flashed a genuine smile.

“I’d like a large IV-drip with room for Geritol.” Coffee was a dear friend at this year’s convention. The days started hours before the 8 o’clock breakfast and more often than not, ended past midnight.

At the convention, I enjoyed the opportunity to meet and briefly speak with the likes of Karl Rove, Newt Gingrich, former Baltimore Sun reporter Eric Segal, who now reports for NPR, Howard Kurtz, the Washington Post columnist, new media blogger Andrew Breitbart - http://tinyurl.com/kl6rvl, Fred Davis, the media talent behind the McCain campaign ads, and actor Jon Voight.

One day I took a moment to meander around the media area and stumbled across Mr. Kurtz. He looked busy and somewhat lost in his own little world as everyone buzzed around him.

Although I cannot remember a word Mr. Kurtz said, I do recall that he was friendly. He peered up from his tiny laptop long enough to be cordial and polite, connected with a brief witty, self-effacing moment, and then went right back to work.

I was amused that he was working on this teeny-tiny laptop to the point that one wondered how his fingers could avoid hitting two keys at once.

He was slumped over his work, clad in a brown sweater, no tie, and a mischievous smile. He presented in stark contrast with the many media types who were there immaculately dressed in expensive suits, complete with a caricature grimace or self-important scowl – and an obvious need to go to the bathroom.

My photograph turned out grainy, but as I reflected upon the moment later, perhaps the only thing that would have made the scene more perfect would have been if he had a black coffee, a cigar dangling out of the corner of his mouth and a bottle of Jack Daniels adorning the corner of the snapshot printed in black and white.

So there was Howard – who looked up and said something like, “Hi, how are ya? Having a good convention? …” For a moment he seemed like all he had to do at the convention was to greet my wife and me. And then with a perfect polite verbal segue, he went back to work.

Sen. John McCain’s choice of Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate was the dominating conversation in St. Paul at the Republican National Convention. Sunday readers of The Frederick News-Post and The New York Times should not have been surprised. The investigation of the Fort Detrick anthrax incident is still very much alive, despite declaration of its death by the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia. Following politics rather than proof, Jeffrey Taylor officially closed the case.

This program, TERC (now called Pearson Math Investigations) has a poor foundation and virtually no books or parent involvement. Hurrah! A breath of fresh air has come into the presidential race. I laughed with delight at the perfection of the choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as soon as I heard it. At least the conventions are a stepping-stone along the road to electing a new president, but here we sit, waiting. We wait for a president to solve our problems for us, as is human nature. Surely they will, as their speeches tell us so.

Shedding light on candidate myths

By Ann McFeatters, White House Watch

Tuesday, September 09, 2008

ST. PAUL, Minn.

So, it's up to us, folks

The balloons are popped, the fireworks are spent, grand acceptance speeches have been made. The elaborate Hollywood-type sets have been struck, the flags and strange hats are packed away, the country music CDs silenced. The conventions are over.

As good citizens who want to make our votes count, we must sort through the verbiage, spin, disinformation, wild promises, clever attacks, innuendo, sexism, racism, classism and religiosity to pick the next president and vice president on the basis of substance, critical issues, vision, quality of experience and gut instinct.

This will not be easy.

Because of the unpopular war in Iraq and the weak economy, both blamed on President Bush, Barack Obama should be ahead in the polls. He's not. Statistically, he and John McCain start the general election campaign about even.

No astute person denies that Democrats will gain House and Senate seats, but it's impossible to say whether McCain or Obama will win. Flat predictions are based on emotion, gut feelings or wishful thinking. Swing voters are still deciding.

This is my scorecard of the smokescreens and false arguments we should avoid from both parties:

A focus on media bias

A focus on media bias

September 8, 2008

The NYT Tackles US Weekly's "Scandalous" Cover Story on Sarah Palin

A focus on liberal bias: "The celebrity magazine, which usually focuses more on Britney and baby bumps than elections, drew criticism from readers for the cover. A record number of commenters on the Us magazine Web site -- more than 6,600, at last count -- weighed in, most focusing on the magazine's perceived bias."

Posted by: Clay Waters 9/8/2008 2:22:59 PM

In an uncommon acknowledgement of the media bias issue, reporter Stephanie Clifford tackled allegations of pro-Michelle Obama, anti-Sarah Palin bias in the celebrity magazine US Weekly in a Monday Business section story, “
Readers See Bias in US Weekly’s Take on Sarah Palin.”

"One of the tricks of the magazine trade is attracting attention at the supermarket checkout. For Us Weekly magazine, which featured a cover story about Sarah Palin titled “Babies, Lies & Scandal,” it was mission accomplished. "

[…]

"Many contrasted the cover of Ms. Palin with a June cover, “Why Barack Loves Her,” featuring Barack and Michelle Obama. “Barack and Michelle in an embrace and a fluff article on their marriage....only to be followed by a picture of our possible future VP with her newborn baby and an insulting and untrue title to the magazine cover?” one reader posted."

* * * * *

September 8, 2008 - Pictured above - - On the left: “US Weekly” June 2008 cover featuring a pleasant article about the marriage of Barack and Michelle Obama. On the right: “US Weekly” September 2008 cover featuring Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in an unpleasant article about Ms. Palin and her family.

Let’s be honest. I’m not sure I really consider “US Weekly” to be media of any substance. It’s really just provocative middle school typing and salacious pictures.

Then again, the compare and contrast between the two magazine covers comes at a time in which the elite media in this country continues to be called on the carpet for its situational ethics and moral relativism – and there continues to be a momentum gathering to hold the media responsible for its documented, albeit unapologetic bias.

I personally witnessed the incident at the Republican National Convention of which David Bauder writes:

“During her acceptance speech last week, Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin talked about the "Washington elite" not accepting her qualifications for the job. Some delegates on the convention floor began chanting, "N-B-C, N-B-C.’ ”

In the long run, it may prove to be serendipitous for advocates such as “US Weekly” to “endorse” Illinois Senator Barack Obama – and for the surrogates of the Obama campaign to keep kicking Governor Palin as the middle of the road independent voter will not be compelled or persuaded to vote for the Obama-Biden ticket by endorsements by nutbars.

When I arrived home from the Republican National Convention, my answering machine was filled with requests for lawn signs and bumper stickers. If you’ve ever run for public office, you know how difficult it is to get people to display your name on their lawn or bumper. Getting asked to supply them is almost unheard of. And these are not “party-regulars.” These are people who have never been involved before.

Palin improvised as teleprompter balked - American Conservative Union chairman David Keene describes the tense, behind-the-scenes scramble when RNC officials discovered the teleprompter wasn't properly loading Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's speech text.

September 1-4 2008 Republican National Convention

American Conservative Union 9/5/08 5:32 PM As the word that Sen. John McCain was about to name Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate began to leak out early last Friday, conservatives were ecstatic and the mood of those converging on St. Paul began to change.

Many of those arriving to attend this year’s Republican National Convention were less than enthusiastic about their nominee for president. But they headed home ready to work their hearts out for him and Palin.

The conventional wisdom is that few people vote for or against a candidate for president because of the vice presidential candidate. The last time a running mate made the winning difference was arguably 1960 when Lyndon Johnson tipped the scales in favor of John F. Kennedy by delivering Texas “the old-fashioned way.”

This year might be different, however, as Palin has not only energized the Republican base, but has come out of the box swinging. Who she is and what she represents could very well change the nature of this fall’s contest.

Palin’s formidable oratorical talent was on display as she delivered one of the most electrifying convention speeches since Ronald Reagan took the podium in Kansas City in 1976.

She wowed those in the hall and the 37 million Americans watching her on television with a performance that was all the more impressive to those who knew what had gone on behind the scenes.

National party conventions are scripted and planned to the minute and this year’s GOP convention was no exception, but things started going wrong when former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani began speaking.

Giuliani had agreed to a time limit imposed on him by convention officials and gave them a script to be loaded on the teleprompter that complied with their parameters, but he had no intention of stopping when his time was up.

Convention managers were forced to improvise. They dropped the video biography of Palin scheduled to precede her speech, but then discovered that the “hard” or typed copy of her speech was back at her hotel.

As Giuliani went on, they hurried to get it to the hall and finally handed it to Palin just as Giuliani wrapped up and pushed her out onto the stage. Here, they discovered that Palin’s speech text wouldn’t load into the teleprompter properly.

This was her big test and everything around the governor seemed to be coming unglued, but few in the hall ever knew it. She worked from the text, improvised and threw in a few things on her own and began to wow the crowd even before the teleprompter came back on line.

Those backstage who knew what was going on were even more impressed with her performance than the audience. One of them said later almost in awe of her handling of situation said, “She really is the real deal.”

Indeed she is. What’s more, she changes the game…
