Newsbusters: Network Double Standard: Obama's TSA vs. Bush's NSA

While the broadcast networks have generally empathized with the distress of airline passengers over the TSA’s new and intrusive airport searches, they have not — thus far, at least — gone so far as to impugn the Obama administration as launching a war against Americans’ civil liberties.

Indeed, NBC’s Matt Lauer on Monday even sympathized with TSA Administrator John Pistole: “I hate to even think of what happens if the government caves in on this, and relaxes these procedures, and someone manages to get something on board a plane and causes harm. Imagine the questions you'll be asked at that point.”

But that’s not the approach those networks took when it was the Bush administration taking steps to protect citizens against potential attack. Instead, as a 2006 analysis by the Media Research Center documented, the networks firmly aligned themselves with those who saw the Patriot Act and the electronic surveillance of international phone calls as a dire threat to civil liberties.

National Public Radio is right to defend itself against charges of Nazism leveled at the radio station by Fox News chief Roger Ailes, who has since apologized for the remark. But NPR decided to make the leap from defending the station to attacking Fox News as uniquely disposed to Nazi comparisons, an absurd claim on its face.
There are commentators on both sides of the political spectrum who routinely prove Godwin right. But being the predictably-liberal news outlet that it is, NPR invoked vague claims by far-left Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank (neither his ideological leanings nor the multitude of his most recent baseless Fox accusations are mentioned) to paint FNC as unique in its invocation of Nazism.

David Gregory is clearly concerned that if Republicans don't vote in favor of the START treaty with Russia, President Obama's international image, as well as American prestige abroad, will be damaged.
On Sunday's "Meet the Press," Gregory asked Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, "Is this going to potentially be a problem with the president not being able to get what he wants on the world stage because of Republicans?"

Rumsfeld disputes GQ report

Rumsfeld disputes GQ report By Ben Smith

May 19, 2009 Categories:

An aide to former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Keith Urbahn, e-mails to contest a widely discussed
GQ article by Robert Draper, which suggested that Rumsfeld "appreciated" the practice of quoting Biblical quotations on the cover sheets of classified briefings, and that Rumsfeld brought the briefings to President Bush.

Urbahn e-mails that the briefings in question were not routinely sent to Rumsfeld, and that Rumsfeld considers the cover slides "harmful and counterproductive to the war effort."

Urbahn's full e-mail:

Bush Derangement Syndrome reaches new unbelievable depths

Bush Derangement Syndrome reaches new unbelievable depths... After you click on the hyperlink, ponder for yourself, just what would be the reaction of the left if conservatives were to do this to President Barack Obama?

No President Needs This Kind of Exposure By PATRICK HEALY February 7, 2009 New York Times

“So far six audience members have stormed out midperformance of the Broadway show “You’re Welcome America. A Final Night with
George W Bush,” the comedian Will Ferrell’s lampooning of the 43rd president, according to those keeping count at the Cort Theater. But they haven’t been leaving after a particular Ferrell quip.”

Read the rest here, but be warned that it is quite offensive. Of course: “No surprise, the play has been a major draw for New York liberals. The production, which largely features Mr. Ferrell doing the Bush character he made famous on “Saturday Night Live” on NBC, has been playing to near capacity at the Cort Theater, which has more than 1,000 seats, since it began previews on Inauguration Day. It is scheduled to run through March 15, and will be presented live on HBO next month.”

Bush adds writing a book to his to-do list

Bush adds writing a book to his to-do list

Alison Flood guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 13 January 2009

I had come across this item awhile ago and with the continuing “Bush Bashing” going on, I bookmarked it because I knew the information would come in handy sooner than later.

Then earlier today, I came across an account, in some random reading, in which someone wrote something to the effect that “now we have a president that reads”… ya da a da…:

After December's shock revelation that George W Bush reads a book a week, it has now emerged that Dubya is also plotting his own contribution to America's literary canon once he leaves the White House next week.

[…]

The news follows his former senior adviser and deputy chief of staff Karl Rove's surprise revelation on 26 December that Bush devoured a total of 40 books in 2008, 51 in 2007 and 95 in 2006, with reading matter an erudite mix of history and biography - as well as an annual flick through the Bible, and an excursion into existentialism with Albert Camus's The Stranger in 2006.

More Unfairness Against Israel Double standards in Gaza: Reporter Ethan Bronner put the Palestinian case in emotionally resonant terms, while his marshalling of pro-Israel arguments is scattered and grudging.

Reviewer: Reporter David Sanger's Book Sure to Infuriate Rove, Bill O'Reilly A reviewer on reporter David Sanger's anti-Bush book: "These unvarnished conclusions by Mr. Sanger will of course confirm the perfidy that Karl Rove and Bill O'Reilly presume lies in the black hearts of Times reporters. But Mr. Sanger's criticism, the product of extraordinarily diligent reporting, is too hawkish to be easily dismissed by conservatives."

New York Times Op Ed columnist suggests Bush turn the presidency over to Pelosi for a Thanksgiving present…

New York Times Op-Ed columnist Gail Collins has suggested that for Thanksgiving President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Chaney ought to resign and turn the president’s office over to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

No, this is not April Fools Day and to the best of knowledge, this is not a spoof.

And no this is not humor from The Onion or a Katie Couric dream sequence.

It’s well, read on…

Thanksgiving is next week, and President Bush could make it a really special holiday by resigning.

Gail Collins photo by Tony Cenicola/The New York Times

Seriously. We have an economy that’s crashing and a vacuum at the top. Bush — who is currently on a trip to Peru to meet with Asian leaders who no longer care what he thinks — hasn’t got the clout, or possibly even the energy, to do anything useful. His most recent contribution to resolving the fiscal crisis was lecturing representatives of the world’s most important economies on the glories of free-market capitalism.

Putting Barack Obama in charge immediately isn’t impossible. Dick Cheney, obviously, would have to quit as well as Bush. In fact, just to be on the safe side, the vice president ought to turn in his resignation first. (We’re desperate, but not crazy.) Then House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would become president until Jan. 20. Obviously, she’d defer to her party’s incoming chief executive, and Barack Obama could begin governing.

What do the president’s speech to the American people on Thursday, and the performance of both the Democratic and Republican candidate at the first presidential debate in Oxford, Mississippi, have in common? Answer: None of them acted with full candor and in a bipartisan way, as advertised.

The Harvard of the West is the catch-phrase prized by California's Stanford University. Thatchers Daughter Reveals Ex Premier Has Dementia by Kevin Sullivan for the Washington Post

Thatchers Daughter Reveals Ex Premier Has Dementia by Kevin Sullivan for the Washington Post

On Tuesday, August 26, 2008, Kevin Sullivan wrote a piece for the Washington Post that the former prime minister of Britain, Margaret Thatcher, now 82, has a form of geriatric onset dementia.

Although such as been rumored for quite sometime; for many of us who admired her public service – whether or not we agreed with all of her decisions and approaches - the news was greeted with great sadness.

History will be kind to Mrs. Thatcher.

However, even more so sad was the reaction of
too many folks in the comment section.

For many of us who have never gotten used to the vile personal viciousness of the left, the comments seemed way over the top. (Related - See:

Where’s the humanity?

Thatcher's Daughter Reveals Britain's Ex-Premier Has Dementia

By Kevin Sullivan

Washington Post Foreign Service

Tuesday, August 26, 2008; A10

LONDON, Aug. 25 -- The daughter of
Margaret Thatcher has disclosed that Britain's former prime minister is suffering from dementia, in the family's first public confirmation of what has been widely rumored in Britain for several years.

Thatcher's condition has deteriorated so much that she forgets that her husband, Denis Thatcher, died in 2003, her daughter reports in a memoir to be published next month, serialized over the weekend in the Mail on Sunday newspaper.

"I had to keep giving her the bad news over and over again," Carol Thatcher wrote. "Every time it finally sank in that she had lost her husband of more than 50 years, she'd look at me sadly and say 'Oh' as I struggled to compose myself. 'Were we all there?' she'd ask softly."

Carol Thatcher said she first noticed her mother's failing memory over lunch in 2000, a decade after she left 10 Downing Street. Margaret Thatcher was prime minister from 1979 to 1990.

[…]

In her book, "A Swim-On Part in the Goldfish Bowl: A Memoir," Carol Thatcher wrote that her mother still shows flashes of her old self, particularly about events from her time in office.
